Serving Up Success

Updated on 06/10/2024 | Asher Pitofsky

In just their second official season, the boys tennis team experienced great success, finishing with its best season to date. With a roster of 14 dedicated players, the team set new standards for excellence and camaraderie under the leadership of Head Coach Adam Sacks. In fact, DC won the Bicentennial Athletic League (BAL) title for the second consecutive year, claiming the championship both as a team and in the doubles tournaments. Additionally, the team’s performance in the District I PIAA finals left them just one win shy of securing a state playoff berth.

The team normally competes with three singles players and two doubles teams, employing seven players per match. This year’s squad was strengthened by a significant number of freshmen eager to contribute to the team’s success. Leading the team, though, was junior Matthew Levis, who earned the MVP award for his outstanding performance as the first singles player. Levis also triumphed in the BAL singles tournament, underscoring his role in the team’s achievements. Reflecting on the season, Levis said, "I really enjoy being part of this team… we all encourage each other. We are all there for each other, and the whole team is dedicated and supportive." Fellow junior Daniel Ho was recognized with the Everyday Excellence Award for his consistent contributions, while sophomore Asher Pitofsky and senior Jackie Wang were celebrated as the Most Improved Players.

With an overall record of 12-4, DC showed dominance in their league, remaining undefeated in BAL matches. All of their losses were out-of-league, yet they still managed to secure victories against several out-of-league opponents.

Assistant Coach Jim Pitofsky praised the team’s camaraderie, describing them as "a great group of kind, fun, funny, supportive guys who cheered each other on." He highlighted memorable moments such as "individual moments with players when it clicked for them in a match" and “the exhilarating victory against Holy Ghost that clinched their [DC’s] spot in the district finals.”

Senior Richard Sun recalled team dinners and sports nights, emphasizing the joy of shared experiences despite occasional self-doubt during challenging matches. He remarked, “The support from parents, providing snacks, drinks, and transportation, was also integral to the team’s success, as were the coaches’ patience and encouragement.” Junior Daniel Ho added, "The community was very tight, and we all were close. This was the best year so far and I really enjoyed it."

As DC looks ahead to future seasons, the accomplishments of this year will undoubtedly serve as a source of inspiration and a standard for success. The team’s historic run to the state competition marks the beginning of what promises to be a bright future for DC tennis.
