The DC Knights have established a strong reputation in the track and field arena. At the forefront of the team is a group of athletes who embody the spirit of dedication, hard work, and teamwork. This season’s legacy of excellence is a testament to the hard work and perseverance of our student-athletes and the unwavering support of the coaches and school.
The Knights’ unwavering team spirit and camaraderie is admirable as each member of the team supports and motivates one another, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive. This sense of unity and shared purpose drives this diverse group representing all four grades to push through challenges and celebrate each other’s successes. “The team as a whole helped me with my form while running,” remarked freshman Nandi Williams, “which in turn made me feel comfortable while running.”
Moreover, track and field fosters leadership and teamwork. Even in individual events, the collective success of the team depends on each member’s performance and support for one another. This environment cultivates a sense of responsibility and mutual respect that extends beyond the track.
Some of the season’s highlights included numerous athletes beating their personal bests, showcasing their dedication and improvement throughout the season. Notably, seniors CJ Simbiri and Makaiya Keys earned All-Delco awards, a prestigious recognition of their outstanding performances. “It is hard to say one highlight here are several,” voiced Coach George McFarland, “Firstly, seeing the relays and CJ complete at Penn Relays; secondly, seeing the girls break the 4 x 100 relay record. Lastly, getting nine girls to state this year and seeing Makiyah Keys win four district gold medals.
While the DC boys placed second place in the BAL and third at districts, the DC girls finished second place at BAL and captured an astounding win at districts. “I was very pleased with both the boys and girls teams this season,” stated Coach McFarland “Even without CJ, who was hurt around championship time, the boys were a very respectable second place at BAL and third at districts. The girls were second at BAL but then turned around and won the district by 60 points over Dock, who had beaten them at BAL. The team results are one thing; the individual improvements of the athletes is always a highlight when you talk about performances.”
Furthermore, the DC Knights girls’ track and field team clinched the district title and advanced to the state championships, a testament to their hard work and strategic preparation. Junior Hallie Kees finished seventh place in the javelin, equaling her personal record with a throw of 123’ 8”.
Significantly the success of the DC track and field team is bolstered by strong support from both the school and local community. Parents, teachers, and students regularly attend meets, creating an energetic and encouraging atmosphere. “We lost a number of seniors who have been around for 3 to 4 years.” remarked Coach McFarland. “I’m very excited, however, to see underclassmen step up this year and give promise for next year, including Hallie Kees, Alex Confino, Joey Cuozzo, Jonas Ma, Jessica Cooper and others.”
Their story is one of triumphs, both on and off the track, serving as a source of pride and inspiration for the entire school and community.
