A Stellar Start for Lacrosse
Updated on 06/10/2024 | Tyler Rezer
This year DC was able to operate its first-ever, non-hybrid boys lacrosse program, which included 20 participants spanning the Middle and Upper School. According to senior Eli Fischer, “I believe that our team did a great job as a first-year program. Many students, including myself, had never played high school lacrosse before and didn’t understand all of the nuances of the game.”
Despite many of the players knowing little about lacrosse before the season started, the team finished with a 5-3 record. The season was led by head coach Antonio Gibson and assistant coaches Dan Videon and Asa Tyson. Gibson, who was a goaltender for Neumann College and is currently in his second year as assistant coach for Ohio Northern’s men's lacrosse team, had this to say about the new lacrosse program’s first season: “I'm very excited about the strides we made on and off the field this year. I'm looking forward to building on them going into next year and would love for anyone interested in playing to join us in building a successful program.”
Due to a challenge in acquiring adequate roster numbers, the boys lacrosse team was available to the entire Upper Campus, which resulted in multiple middle-school students playing alongside their high-school counterparts. According to Eli Fischer, “Playing with middle schoolers afforded the high schoolers the opportunity to really step up and be leaders, no matter what grade you were in, which allowed the team to grow…. Often, the seniors are the ones seen as the leaders, but because we were practicing with middle schoolers as well, it gave us all the opportunity to step up and lead each other.”
After DC’s original season as a non-hybrid squad, many are wondering how the team will perform over the next few seasons. To this end, freshman Liam Roykouff commented, “I think if we continue to build a good roster, we’ll do a great job in the next couple seasons.”
Overall, this initial year of competition laid a strong foundation for the future of the lacrosse team, putting in place an experienced coach and a talented array of players from upper and middle school ranks—-elements that are critical for the establishment of a strong, solid, team.
