Last season was a tough one for DC’s softball team. Finishing 1-16 and exiting in the first round of districts wasn’t the outcome for which anyone had hoped. However, if there’s one thing this year's team isn’t lacking, it’s motivation.
Head coach Nathan Shackleton believes this season feels different. “In terms of excitement, we have some new additions that will be exciting to see how those pieces fit together on the field,” remarks the veteran mentor. With a large group of upperclassmen returning, the focus is on wins. Nevertheless, more importantly, the team is focused on building something lasting. Shackleton emphasizes the opportunity to strengthen team culture and grow closer as a unit. After injuries disrupted last season’s progress, the goal is to stay healthy and make a deep postseason run. According to Shackleton, “A successful season would include reaching the district championship. We have a team that has more overall drive this year.”
The work toward that goal has begun long before the first pitch of the season. Players have been putting in extra time by participating in Wednesday weight room workouts, throwing and pitching in the gym during the week, and practicing every other Saturday at school or local batting cages. Although many sessions have been deemed optional, several players have consistently shown up to prepare for the upcoming season.
As a result of the pre-season work, team chemistry is already developing, with a strong mix of returning players and new additions. That balance has created early excitement about both this season and the future of the program. “It’s encouraging to see the team working well together so early,” notes senior Maryn D’Antonio. “Strong chemistry is one of the most important parts of the game.” Junior Katheryn Certo also has taken note of this chemistry: “The thing that makes this team so special is the bond that all of the players have. We understand that mistakes made on the field get left on the field and don’t blame each other because we all make mistakes. We build off each other to make us stronger.”
Beyond team goals, players are also focused on personal growth. Certo hopes to become a stronger leader and help her teammates grow both mentally and physically. As a team, the players aim not only to win more games and advance further in districts but also to stay mentally tough through both victories and setbacks.
One matchup the team has circled is against Plumstead, a BAL opponent whom they’ve come close to beating in the past. “I feel like our teams are very evenly matched, so it would feel really good to come out on top this season,” states senior Sophia Dixon.
After a challenging 2025 season, the softball team is ready for a fresh start built on hard work, resilience, and a renewed sense of belief.
