Grit, Growth, and Great Tennis: A Season to Remember

The DC girls tennis team closed out their 2024 season with a 7-6 overall record, including a 4-3 finish in the BAL and a 3-3 non-league mark. Beyond the numbers, this season was defined by resilience, leadership, and a deepening sense of community both on and off the court.
One of the most memorable moments came in the team’s second matchup against BAL rival Calvary Christian. After losing to the Cougars earlier in the season, the Knights returned with determination. All three singles players secured crucial wins while the first doubles team of Karis Peters and Kaylee Kroll battled through split sets, falling by just two points. “It was an amazing turnaround,” remarked Coach Day Fogarty. “I could not have been prouder of every DC player that day.”
Individually, senior Lily Peters delivered a standout season, placing second in the BAL Singles Tournament and earning a spot in districts. Her gritty championship match-- where she defeated an historically difficult opponent-- was a season highlight. “I went into every match knowing each point mattered,” she reflected. “The second round of BALs pushed me hard, but fighting for every point got me through.”
Teamwide, Jenkintown remained the toughest opponent this season, producing some of the closest matches of the year, especially involving second and third singles match-ups.
Captains Lily and Sonya emphasized building a strong, inclusive culture. With many new underclassmen, both intentionally created team bonding opportunities rangingfrom dinners to off-court outings. “We wanted everyone to feel part of something bigger,” Sonya shared.
For Coach Fogarty, the season’s biggest victory went beyond match results. Reflecting on their first team devotional on The Good Samaritan, she shared, “My hope was that the girls would become a true community. In so many ways, they did-- supporting one another across grades and friend groups. That growth is more important than any win.”
The Knights ended this season, proud, unified, and already looking forward to what comes next.
Growing in Skills and in Faith

The DC girls tennis team had a successful season last year with a 5-7 record in the BAL and 10-6 overall. Last season, the team showed major growth. “By the end of the season, we really came together as a team,” says senior captain Sonya Curyto. “One of the teams we lost against badly earlier in the season, we beat 4-1 by the end, which moved us up to be ranked second in the BAL”.
So far, this season has been similarly successful. Currently, the girls are 2-1 in the BAL and 3-3 overall. Their matches have been competitive, with their most recent win being against Dock Mennonite Academy.
Looking ahead, the girls are very optimistic about the season ahead. “This year will hopefully be a strong year for us,” remarks senior captain Lily Peters. “We have some new freshmen and a bigger team than last year. Our coach is focusing on each match, and we are preparing to be strong in BAL matches this year.”
First-year coach Day Fogarty is equally excited about the team's success: “We have a strong season ahead. With each match, our players continue to grow. They are working hard on their mental toughness and improving their tennis skills.”
While the girls have had a successful start, “The DC girls tennis team is building more than just skills on the court,” according to Coach Fogarty. She emphasizes that spiritual development is just as important as athletic improvement: “Our job is not to be successful, but to be faithful. If we are faithful, we can rest in the outcome because God is in control of our successes and failures.” The players have held this sentiment, too. Junior Kaylee Kroll notes that she has “seen God working through the friendships we have built and has influenced our mindset.”
With a solid foundation from last season, strong results thus far, and faith leading the way, the DC girls tennis team is ready to continue the season with grit, growth, and purpose.
